Autism Spectrum Disorders: Cognitive Motor Binding

Functional Neurology and hemispheric integration therapy for the treatment of autism spectrum disorders sometimes uses a concept called cognitive binding engine treatment of these children. This is based on the fact that the balance and coordination are the main comorbidity associated with these conditions. That is the finding more frequently seen associated with autism spectrum disorders is a lack of coordination and difficulty with balance. If you look at the feed system to sensory receptors in the body to the brain we find the motor system is an important input for brain stimulation. Proprioception, joint position sense and balance the momentum a considerable amount of electrical activity in the brain. You have to know what their position in the body is and where his body is in space to survive on this planet. When joints are, how fast the muscles or movement and where you are in relation to the seriousness are important inputs to the activity Brain unit.

We know that the same pathways and circuits that coordinate movements smooth and also a softness and coordinate their thoughts. This is the essence cognitive motor binding. I like to tell people in my presentations, if I talk to parents or professionals, if you look at a child on the autism spectrum and watch their movements are coordinated, this gives a window into how uncoordinated your thoughts can be. The beauty of this concept is that it works in reverse too. The smooth and coordination their movements, which tend to smooth out and coordinate their thoughts as well. So we can use this as a window into the mind of the child in order to help sync the timing and processing of sensory stimuli and thoughts. This concept is partially responsible for some of the results of studies that can be read in conjunction with the interactive metronome and improvements with respect to children with ADHD. Therefore, any activity that improves coordination, rhythm, timing and direction tend to be useful in these cases.

This is a generality, of course. If I talk to parents or professionals, I am always trying to make the point that the specificity is the key in terms of helping these children. There are few generalities, but every child tends to be different and unique with respect to their signs and symptoms. For this reason, by stimulating any sensory receptor to boost brain activity is imperative to be specific as you may inadvertently stimulate an area that can cause a regression or encourage that child over and cause a regression as well. Therefore, I always recommend before undertaking any activity involving a neuroscience approach refer the patient functional, not only with a doctor trained in functional neurology, but also one that has experience dealing with children with autism.

When dealing with children with autism, two common issues often come into play. They are "what the child needs to do to improve" and "What You can do the child. "The second question can sometimes subdivided into" what the child can or can not do and / or what will make the child. "Many times children are capable of performing the exercises, but are unwilling to do so. This may be a matter of motivation and / or how the child to try to maintain some control about the situation. So many times we use rewards to motivate the child to cooperate. I always say that parents are the ones who know the child best and this is where they can be very helpful. Therefore, you have to find the proper motivation for the particular child you are trying at the same time. In addition, the doctor should be noted that the child progress and mature in their thoughts. Therefore, the same reward that motivated him in the first month can not be attractive in two months. Recognition special that we like to use if possible with the children is the Whac-a-mole game. We tend to use this towards the end of the treatment session, or between the activities that the child is difficult. This game tends to be fun for the child and serves as a dual purpose to require some coordination, rhythm and timing. There are plenty ways to stimulate different ways weakened and circuits found in these children. The doctor's task is to find out how the route should be encouraged to design therapy to stimulate this pathway and then match it to the child's level of function and behavior. We always like to make fun of the therapy sessions so that children are not afraid to enter therapy. This makes it enjoyable for all involved. Below is a link to the Amazon site where you can be Whac-a mole game purchased. Maybe they can use to help motivate your child. Please note that while this is a toy, if you're using it for therapeutic purposes not a toy.
