How do I make my dog put objects in her mouth? (part of dog trick)?
I have a dog who will just sniff things and not put them in her mouth even with a toy! How can i make her do it? She needs to be able to do it for a trick she’s learning!She’s a shih tzu.

Some breeds are more difficult than others (retrievers make it easy) but the basics are to first teach “drop” so you can get a reliable release. Then you engage the dog by playing with the desired item. When the dog bites the item, you remove your hands and mark the slightest hold and reward with a tiny (1/8″ cubed”) training treat OR don’t use a treat at all if playing, tugging or chasing the item is adequate reward.. Each time you stretch it out slightly. Only reward for releasing AFTER the commnd. If you are consistent, the dog will get it.
If you really want to have some fun, enroll in a good clicker training class. Understanding that whole philosophy will open up a whole new world to you and your dog.
