Chicken keepers.. must have rooster??

HI.. so I’m a lacto-ovo vegetarian, meaning I eat no meat but do eat dairy and eggs.. I realize that these products come to me through cruelty..

So I’ve been toying with the idea of having a few (1-3) pet hens and eating their eggs.. my friend does this, but she also has a rooster, so the eggs are fertilized, which I don’t prefer..

So, my question is.. is there any GOOD reason to keep a rooster with hens?? Any particular reason that alot of people tend to do that??

would keeping 1-3 chickens without a rooster, taking good care of them be an okay thing to do??

Let me know, experienced chicken people LOL….
BTW.. I don’t eat eggs alot, but I could find people to take any of the eggs I don’t want (my friend actually lets the extra ones sit in the chicken coop until the local snake gets em..)

But I do like eggs once in awhile, and when baking I prefer not to “veganize” it.. I just don’t like vegan cakes, etc.. as well as those made with eggs.. .

I’m pretty much vegan–but I do eat my own chicken’s eggs. I have roosters and hens, but I really have them to be pets, I just eat the eggs as an added bonus. LOL.

Keeping at least 2 hens (they need companionship) without a rooster is fine. They’ll still lay eggs and be happy. There’s no real reason to have a rooster if you want them strictly for egg layers (I find that roosters make the better pets though).

Make sure you look into keeping chickens before going out and getting some (be prepared to see many disturbing photos of dead chickens, skinned chickens, chicken scalders, diagrams on killing chickens, etc) while doing your research. I found that to be one of the hardest parts, because I love chickens and hate to see things like that, yet they’re all over the place in chicken raising books/magazines/websites. Just a warning ahead of time if that will bother you…be prepared.

Make sure you’ve got a good safe environment for them to live in, and provide next boxes, perches, a place to dust bathe, etc. Make sure you feed them proper food as well as fewsh veggies, fruits, protein (cat food works well), etc. Make sure you buy some grit and mix it in with their food sometimes. You should probably buy pullets (young hens) or chicks at least 8 weeks old. You can socialize these birds much easier than you could adult hens, if you want to be able to handle your birds. Some breeds are also bred to be more people-friendly than others, so make sure you pick a breed that suits What You want in a chicken.

I can’t really explain everything you need to know here, but I bet your chicken-raising friend can help you out. I’ll also include some websites for you to see…

Best wishes and enjoy your birds!
