Target Shooting

What kind of SKS is the best for target shooting/minor hunting?

I’ve been told the SKS isn’t the most accurate rifle, and 3″ groups with ironsights benched at 100 yards is pretty standard, is there any deviation between different national production standards? The reason behind getting this rifle is affordable centerfire target shooting and possible minor hunting. Therefore a bayonet isn’t really required. Also, what happens if a restrictive gun law is enacted when the new president is elected? Comments are appreciated.
Normal Center Fires from Rem. and Win. Cost atleast 3-5 times more $ than a Mil-Surp SKS, plus the ammo is atleast 5 times more $. I’m lookin for a cheap targeter, as I can use my uncle’s Remington 700 series hunting rifles for actual hunting.

only one i would get is the russian, shear pin is forged instead of stamped (chinease). freind found out the hard way. he took it to firing range fired a box thru it but he didnt know that on the last round the shear pin broke, he was in his bedroom and loaded a full thirty-round clip in it, pulled back the bolt to load the first round in the chamber. justr as soon as the bolt slammed the first round it went off (without him touching trigger) full-auto and emptied the whole banana clip thru his wall into neighbors living room!!!!! as for accuracy, well lets just say, 100 just isnt a challenge. i was plinking things on the bullet stop behind the targets which were at least 250 yrds away and never has to raise the sights off lowest setting. ask any veitnam vet about the sks….they fear it. one vet told me you could take any given rifle in the woods, fire it, then fire an sks, and he could pick it out. they were simply out-gunned. m-16 was a .223…a mere high powered .22. sks is a (7.62×39) very close to a .30 caliber with more bullet mass and range. very formidable assault rifle. and the sks wasnt designed for fully automatic, it was a semi-auto feild infantry rifle, the full auto that shoots the same cartridge (7.62×39) is the ak-47, which is made by several diffrent countries; afganastan, turkey, china, and russia. its been about 8 years since i had mine but i was buying boxes of 20 at army surplus stores of imported russian non-corrosive hollow points for around 4.50 cents a box. and they are hunting legal.

What is POI? It’s Point of Impact and there are multiple ways to look at POI. The first is the nature of your barrels to shoot straight and a second refers to proper gun fit.

Do your barrels actually send the shotstring on a straight line to the target? From a bench rest, as you would a rifle, does your shotstring hit the bulls-eye dead on, with 50% distribution on the top, bottom, left and right? Or is it slightly high, low or off center? If score is a priority in your game, this is an important piece of information. Your barrels should be shooting dead on.

Once that is established, the next question is, where do you personally want your POI to be?

50/50 (top and bottom) POI seems to be a favorite among sporting clays shooters. For good reasons, some skeet shooters favor a slightly higher POI and trap shooters higher still.

Assuming your barrels do shoot straight, stock dimensions, rib configurations and gun fit can all move or affect POI. Depending on your stock dimensions—rib configuration—and how a stock fits you—all move your shooting eye up or down behind the receiver. The final configuration of all this can directly affect your final X count—and the number of birds in your game pouch.

Checking you POI is a good idea. Remember too, a good gun fitter and stocker can move that POI to precisely where you want it.
