Why did the French give the Statue of Liberty to the Americans?

Does anyone know why France gave the Statue of Liberty to the Americans? Then the other is a gift of friendship? Was it after helping a war or something?

to recognize the friendship and cooperation developed during revolution. That American friendship is also why many elementary school students have French.

Information about the Statue of Liberty

The Statue of Liberty is a monument at the port of New York. Was presented to the United States the people of France in 1886 and became a symbol of freedom for all immigrants who come to the country. The purpose of the donation was to celebrate the centenary U.S. as an independent country. The statue is of a woman dressed in a tunic and holding a flame. It is made of sheet copper and is hung on a framework steel. The flame of the torch is coated in gold leaf. It is a symbol of the United States that is recognized worldwide as a symbol of a country where people fled to escape persecution and oppression.

The interior of the statue is open to visitors. You have to take a ferry from either Liberty Park in New Jersey or Battery Park in New York to get to the location of the statue. Although no longer in operation, one time visitors could climb the circular staircase of 354 steps. About 30 people at a time can fit into the crown, which has 25 windows offering a panoramic view of the port. These windows are supposed to represent the crown jewels. There is also a tablet on the statue that says July 4, 1776, which is the date on which the United States became an independent nation. The statue itself is designed so that it can withstand extreme weather, especially wind power. In windy conditions, the statue will sway, rather rest.

French sculptor Frederic Bartholdi, was commissioned to create this monument, when it was decided what would be the gift from France. His first model, completed in 1870, it was only small and now on display at the Jardin du Luxembourg in Paris. The American people built the base and the French built the sculpture and was responsible for sending it to New York. Delays prevented the statue from being presented on the date of the centenary, but the arm and torch were completed so that at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia in 1876, these pieces were displayed. Visitors pay 50 cents to climb a ladder of height and view these parts of the structure.

The Statue of Liberty arrives in New York Harbor on July 17, 1885. It fell to 350 pieces and shipped in 214 boxes. Once they arrived, the statue had to put back together. The end of the construction of the pedestal was completed on April 22, 1886. During the time between the completion of this and its arrival the statue was kept in storage. It took four months to reassemble the pieces and was released on October 22, 1886.

For the first year Statue of Liberty serves as a lighthouse. In 1910, floodlights were placed around the base. The Black Tom explosion of 1916 caused about $ 100.00 damage the statue. This led to the closure of the stairs to the visitors. Modifications and repairs were made and dedicated by President Roosevelt on the 50th anniversary of its inauguration.
