Simon: What changes have you noticed since I started sport fishing in Phuket?
John: In the last two decades Phuket has earned the right to be classified as a truly great destination for fishing, boats offering, infrastructure and the standard hotels wealthy fishermen wait. During the past eighteen years I have lived and fished the waters around Phuket as a fishing-charter captain I have seen many changes, some for the better, some for worse – and some things have not changed at all.
Simon: Has worsened fishing?
John: It has not worsened, is different as the fish have gone from being always on an island suddenly appearing on an island or other, more number. My personal observation about things that happens is that we have seen a massive increase in the number of commercial vessels pursuing what I call the "bait" not only for human consumption, such as fish sauce, but also to feed chickens. Fish are creatures of habit and if suddenly the food they were used to obtain in a particular place, there is nothing that move and find another source.
Simon: So, with all that happens is a destination Phuket good fishing?
Juan: Of course it is! Many of our fishermen have had the best battles of his life, especially with the large number of sailfish around the islands of Racha Yai and Racha Noi, even in the tourist season from May to September. Some fishermen have even lucky to have had the excitement home the capture of one of the good-sized black marlin that appear between October and April.
Simon: Why come to Phuket?
John: I have been fortunate to have visited some of the great fishing capitals of the world, so I trust what these main reasons why you should put on your map Phuket destination if you are a fishing enthusiast. Let's start with the international community airport, which is very close to most of our two stars to five star hotels and above and that is linked to most countries, either directly or through Bangkok. The Thais are the most friendly and popular in smiliest planet. They serve excellent food, mouth-wateringly delicious and varied. The island is blessed with beautiful beaches and offers excellent and varied alternative activities for non-fishing peers. Phuket offers some of the best fishing to be found in Asia, rather than vessels are reasonably priced and have a friendly crew, many of which one can speak reasonable English. So if you are on holiday and want a fishing day or a week, please contact one of the local operators and have a ball. And I almost forgot: we won cold beer too!
