Shifter Switches
I have a 2002 Ford Ranger. will not start unless I move shifter to drive and then back to Park.?
It sometimes will not start unless I move the column shifter to drive and then back to Park. The Starter Relay under the hood is OK. After I jiggle the shifter a few times, it will start again. Is there a switch in the steering column that is easily replaceable? It appears to be an electrical contact.
Yes it is the neutral safety switch, and it should be mounted on the side of the transmission, (driver side) where the linkage goes into the transmission there should be an actuator with an electrical connector bolted, to the transmission. the linkage just pops on sometimes they are stiff but it is just a plastic pop clip you may need a pair of pliers or screwdriver to pop it off. the deal in the column they are talking about is the shifter lock not the saftey switch i believe, you should go get a repair manual however i.e. chiltons or haynes get one at any nationwide parts store should cost about $25.
