The shrubs you mention is called rose of sharon. They are a relative of the Hyacinth. Some hardy annuals have colors you request are petunias, pansies, verbena, Portulaca and mouths dragon. Some perennials are columbine, impatiens, carnations, daisies, astilbe and coral bells. Lamiums (sometimes called dead nettle) are flowering groundcovers white and pink. There are two newer varieties that have purple flowers too. Edit: Rose of Sharon is a relative of hibiscus, hyacinth not. I think What You're thinking is a lilac.
