How do you know that a pet shop takes care of its animals?
I wish to buy 2 guinea pigs. Where I live, there is no RSPCA so a pet shop is the only option. I don’t want to get sick piggies so, how do I know they are a respectable shop? I know how to tell if the actual guinea pig is healthy, but what about the shop?
The nearest rspca is 2 hours away.
There is honestly no other places nearby.

I just wanted to say, I personally work at an Australian pet store, and by no means do I neglect the animals I care for. I can’t speak for the other workers there, but as far as I know, all the animals are properly taken care of, and I always make a point to let a person know what they are up for if they want an animal. I know that lots of pet stores dont properly care for their animals, but pet stores arent all the same, it’s the employees that determine the animal care levels.
But, aside from that, the best you can do is research healthy guinea pig behavior, and study the guinea pigs for sale carefully. Choose a staff member that looks respectable and smart, but also cares for the animal (these people are usually the ones smiling). Definitly avoid the staff people who look grumpy, tired, bored, really young, or ones that look like they would be better in a different field. (For example, there might be a staff member who majors in fish care, not guinea pig care).
Ask them about the guinea pigs, how long have they been there, how old are they, whats their diet, ect. If you notice any delays in answering, or bad answers, you can’t be positive the animal is in Good Condition.
Ask about guinea pig care. If the staff member seems unsure about their answers, try and get a wiser staff member to help. A good way to tell if the answers are genuine or not, is to ask questions to already know the answer to. For example, a guinea pig is a mammal that is prone to respiratory diseases, so an air flow through the cage is essential. Ask them a question like, “Can I put a guinea pig in a cage with air holes only in the top of the cage?”
If they say anything apart from the correct answer, you might want to share some of your knowledge with them, and try to find a staff member who knows what they’re doing.
As for the shop, see if you have any friends or relatives that go to that store, and ask about their reliability. Do they go there often? Are the staff polite and knowledgable? Do the animals look well cared for?
If you dont know anyone who goes to the pet store, just have a look. You dont have to get a guinea pig from the first store you go to. Look for the store that you can tell the animals are treated well.
Or, ditch the pet stores entirely, perhaps there is someone at your school or in your neighbourhood that has guinea pigs that recently gave birth? Enquire about purchasing one from them, or find other animal shelters around. Even hobbyist breeders would be a good place to look.
Well, its up to you how you find your perfect guinea pig. It’s best to be patient, and try all your options before making a choice, a guinea pig is a life binding choice, remember.
