Green light for New Bombardier trams GmbH Rhein-Neckar-Verkehr With innovative energy storage
BERLIN, GERMANY – (Marketwire – December 18, 2009) – Rhein-Neckar-Verkehr GmbH (RNV) is set to the first committee of six new Bombardier trams Variobahn type at its plant in Heidelberg in Germany. These trams are according to the first commercial application of BOMBARDIER MITRAC saving energy, energy storage system innovation. With this system, vehicles require up to 30 percent less energy and are able to operate without catenary.
"We are proud of the new trams. The new system not only us can reduce energy costs – also we are the first operator in the world to utilize this technology in all new vehicles. Therefore not surprising that we awarded the innovation prize by the federal state of Baden-Württemberg to Save Energy MITRAC earlier this year, "said Martin in der Beek, Director Technical Rhein-Neckar-Verkehr GmbH. "We will save about 93'000 kWh of electricity per vehicle each year. It also benefits our region due to lower emissions when generating electricity in nuclear power, "he said in der Beek.
"I'm really pleased that the savings MITRAC energy will be used first in the region where it has developed. There are concrete plans to run the tram catenary free operation more than two sections of about 400 meters each in Heidelberg. The MITRAC Energy Saver is part of the portfolio Eco4 of Bombardier Transportation, will provide rail traffic to be operated in a particularly economical and energy savings.
The MITRAC Energy Saver will save up to 30 percent of the energy and uses an energy recovery system: three units roof-mounted energy storage capacitors used to store the energy generated during braking, ready to release it back to speed up or during operation. The high performance double layer capacitors store MITRAC Energy Savings up to 3 kWh per vehicle. When starting and accelerating, the vehicles require such a large amount electricity and a significant burden on the power grid. This is reduced by 40% in energy savings MITRAC, allowing the network to be used more profitable.
Another advantage of energy storage Bombardier is the catenary-free operation in the points. Thanks to energy saving MITRAC, sections path without contact wires can be run using the stored energy. This usually makes sense in areas of historical importance, where the unique landscape is to preserve. The technology could also be used in two sections of the route under Neuenheimer Feld in Heidelberg, where the electric fields could contact wire interfere with the measuring instruments of high sensitivity of Physical-Technical University and the German Institute for Cancer Research.
Thirteen more vehicles will be delivered in 2010 for Line 5 and sections in Mannheim. The NVR has ordered a total of 19 light rail vehicles with fuel economy MITRAC. They will enter service in late 2010.
