Could lead to a minor child in a motorcycle sidecar is considered negligence?
My son's ex-brother wants to travel Interstate through 3 states with my 6 year old grandson in the sidecar of his motorcycle. We are scared to death because the speed limit is 70 MPH or more, and sidecars seems so vulnerable. Please help.
My granddaughter had this argument with his in-laws. My children and grandchildren and all of them grew sidecar. I would not hesitate to take a child from 6 years through the country in one. The interstate is the safest place to travel. Granted, the speeds are higher but there is no cross traffic, not idiots coming at you and turning left in front of you, and usually no surprises. Add to this the fact that in a car after a few hundred miles, a driver is lulled into half boring warning state and stays there for another couple of hundred miles to a stop for gas. In a motorcycle, the air smells and unobstructed views tend to keep the driver more alert, and a range of 100 miles between gas stops tends to cause the pilots to be better rested and relaxed. In almost 50 years to do so, each motorcycle accident I have been involved in has taken place at speeds below 30 mph and within the limits of the city. If you ask me if it is safe to carry a child for a walk around town I have to think about it. Insist that dad puts on a helmet and safety equipment all the same as an adult would and give his blessing. You will not regret.
