Residents of Southern California: Have the oil wells in places such as Beverly Hills had a negative impact?
on your life or the local eco-system? I’m just trying to figure out why some people associate drilling for oil with massive environmental impact. We’re talking drilling here, not shipping so you can save the Exxon Valdez comments for someone else. Thanks for your input.
Although claims that fumes from the oil well at Beverly Hills High School was responsible for cancer among students were not proven, the owner, Venoco Oil, was cited by the Air Quality Management District for allowing the release of oilfield gas. So the imact of an existing well may not be “massive,” but it is hardly nonexistent. Of course, drilling new wells has a far greater impact. Nobody is drilling new wells in Beverly Hills.
Places such as Signal Hill and Inglewood where major drilling operations took place in the past required major renovation of oil field contamination, though, admittedly, drilling methods have improved since those areas had any substantial new drilling. However, it is just silly to think that there will not be substantial ecological impact from a major industrial operation such as drilling an oil well. The questions presented are how much that impact can be reduced or mitigated, and whether the impact is offset by the benefits of oil exploration.
