Scots Need To Revive Lost Art Of Scrummage – Six Nations Rugby
SCOTLAND rugby captain Chris Cusiter has admitted to being “upset” with his team’s latest performance – a 16-12 defeat by Italy in Rome.
And the scrum-half also admits via his Twitter feed that he believes the RBS Six Nations Championship match was one that got away.
“Back from Rome hugely disappointed and upset with our performance. Another one we could’ve won but didn’t,” said Cusiter.
But grand slam legend Kenny Milne, below, believes Cusiter has no reason to be too down and that his charges retain the ability to mark the 20th anniversary of arguably the greatest-ever Scottish triumph – the winner-take-all decider with England in 1990 – by making more history.
The Murrayfield clash on Saturday week will see Scotland go for three successive home victories in the fixture, a feat that hasn’t been achieved since 1976 and which Milne feared might never occur again.
“I honestly thought that when rugby turned professional in the mid-1990s the English, with their huge resources, would pull further out of the range of teams like Scotland,” said Herioter Milne. “That it hasn’t been allowed to happen to the extent three straight home wins are a possibility in the Calcutta Cup is a tribute to a lot of work that has been put in and something worth maintaining when England come up here next week.”
Despite a willingness to look on the bright side Milne, as befits an ex-hooker who reached Test level with the 1993 Lions in New Zealand, nevertheless has a particular beef about an area that needs to improve if Scotland are to return to the competition’s winners’ enclosure.
“In accepting the game has changed in recent years I still cannot understand why teams are not looking to exploit quick scrummage heels any more.
“There was a time when the ball was through the scrum and into the No.8′s hands allowing him to break often before the opposition knew what was happening. It’s been a while since I saw any team attempt this and the Scottish scrum stood accused in my eyes of allowing themselves to be messed about in Wales.
“When the Welsh insisted on packing down too early the Scots should have been more willing to stand up and force a re-set.
“Having said all that not many referees appear to have much of a clue about what is going on in the front rows and Ally Dickinson looked extremely unfortunate to be penalised on one occasion in Italy.
“Especially with better scrummaging the England game needn’t be a lost cause although they will come north with a point to prove after seeing their grand slam hopes ended by Ireland.
“I base this optimism on the fact Scotland, even for a team still looking for a win in this championship, are better now than they were two years ago when England were last defeated in Edinburgh.
“Against France line-breaks were made and form shown that day has been subsequently franked by the way France have put away Ireland and Wales.
“Against Wales there just needed to be a bit more awareness and I don’t buy the suggestion Scotland were looking for the win rather than settle for a draw even with 13 men on the pitch by restarting at 24-24 rather than kicking the ball dead. If the win had truly been the objective rather than thinking being muddled then Scotland would have kicked off straight and deep rather to the side of the pitch where kicking a winning penalty – assuming it could have been gained – was always going to be harder.
“But Scotland looked to me the better team overall in Italy and despite injury problems along the way they have reached a stage in this tournament where a winning finish is still a possibility, partly because it is encouraging to see good players able to be brought in.

Do what the above person said, and make sure you wipe from the middle to the edge, and not in a circular motion. If not you may have to replace the disk.
