Making Healthy Choices Restaurant
In a popular pizza chain, the personal pizza with sausage packs 740 calories and 39 grams of fat. And in a major fast-food joint, a triple burger with everything has 810 calories and 47 grams of fat – two meals worth "of calories and more fat than most of us should scarf in a day.
The bright spots of fat in this scenario dotted? First, you. His power as a client The restaurant is located in your order. The waiter, cook, and manager happy you go – just tell them What You want. Secondly, more and more fast food places, casual dining restaurants and upscale restaurants even offer healthier alternatives on their regular menus.
We believe that a meal away from home should be something delicious and enjoyable – no need to order dry chicken breast, a glass of water. . . and sulk. The trick? A little preparation so you can be more smarter than the menu, avoid the temptation, resist the siren song of enormous portions, and leave the table happy.
Do it your way
Eating out is, in a sense, eating in the dark. They do not usually have access to nutrition labels, so they do not realize that the cheese, butter, oil, sugar, and lots of great size are adding. (That focaccia club sandwich? It packs 1.222 calories and 65 grams of fat!) The vegetables may arrive dripping with butter and cream. The heavenly bread, but it is white. That seemed so healthy salad can have more calories and fat than a cheeseburger, thanks to the fried chicken strips and a sea of clothing.
And then there are lots. When a couple of nutrition experts from New York University food weighed and measured every day, served in Manhattan delis, bakeries and sit-down restaurants, the results were surprising: As compared to portion sizes recommended by the government, portions of pasta were five times heavier cookies were seven times larger, and muffins weighed three times more. Why you may not notice: The parties have been gradually increased in size in the last 30-50 years. "What I found was terrible," says study author Lisa Young in her book Portion Teller: SmartSize your way to the loss permanent weight. "The food we buy today are often two or three times, even five times larger than when first introduced in the market."
If you suspect that restaurant eating is a minefield, you're not alone. Even the food cooks have problems when faced with a delicious menu – or the temptations of cuisine in their own kitchens. (If you are constantly surrounded by chocolate lava cake, fettuccine Alfredo, raisin nut bread and bacon wrapped filet mignon, What would you do?) "Having lunch at a restaurant where you can get in trouble," says the chef Sara Moulton, host of Cooking with Sara Moulton and Sara's Secrets on the Food Network, cookbook author and executive chef of Gourmet magazine. Who would not find it difficult to resist the extras (like foie gras or a dessert sampler of six) that chefs often send to your table?
However, it remains thin Moulton – and even dropped a few pounds when I was about begin by presenting a live television program several years ago. ("The camera does not really add 10 pounds," she says.) His strategy? Do not let yourself too hungry, especially before dinner. "When you're hungry, your resistance to tempting food chopper is falling," he says. She does splurge a little weekly dinner dates with her husband. "Knowing that I can have some cheese on Friday night helps keep me disciplined the rest of the week," he says. Over lunch, Moulton sometimes can not resist eating a whole 714-calorie mozzarella, tomato, basil and a snack. And yet, she believes in not letting a diet detour derail their efforts fruitful to maintain a slender figure. She gets back on the horse: "In those days, my food is a 300-calorie Lean Cuisine."
How can achieve – and maintain – a lean silhouette, while still enjoying a night at a restaurant? These strategies will help.
Step 1: Prepare Plan of Attack
It's amazing how many problems you can get, even before the food arrives. Take an active stance against the assault of low food catapult healthy everywhere.
Take your appetite. Before going out to dinner, eat something as heavy as a bowl of soup, a piece of leftover chicken, a piece of bread toast with low fat cheese and leftover vegetables, yogurt with fruit and nuts, a boiled egg, sliced apple sprinkled with cinnamon. Any minimeal be lower in healthy calories and fat than a snack in a restaurant-the-top.
Know where you go. Familiarize yourself with the guidelines of room for different types of restaurants, and treat to imagine what you will eat, even before entering the door. Do not let the menu domain! If you've been in the restaurant before and can resist the temptation, keep Menu closed. Order what you like, and let the waiter will solve it. Is your food – do it your way.
Avoid the bread basket. It is a major cause of the excess food in restaurants. Send the basket back – out of sight is out of mind. If that is unthinkable, take a slice of bread to enjoy with food. Bread can add an additional 500 calories to your total food is – even as butter or olive oil usually comes with it.
yourself to a drink alcohol limit. Alcohol, whether in the form of a cocktail, wine or beer, can weaken its determination to exercise restraint with food reflexive. In addition, dehydrated and offers no nutritional benefit. When you leave, be limited to one drink – or order a bottle of water instead of fantasy.
Because the body will use alcohol for energy first (followed by carbohydrates, protein and fat), when drinking and eating, excess calories often are stored as fat. To keep from accumulating kilos, entrees jump higher in fat (such as duck and filet mignon) for rate lower in fat (including white fish, pork, chicken, and venison), when wine with dinner.
Drink water. You've heard this before, but we'll say it again: Drink water before, during and after each meal, either at a restaurant, at home or elsewhere.
Step 2: Place your order with confidence
If you feel intimidated by servers, stop right now. Do not worry if you're holding with your questions and requests. Do not be embarrassed. Implementation of the interference between the kitchen and the table is the work of a server, and he or she loves you please. (There is a point in the game …)
Always be aware of portion sizes. Trust us: You probably do not need an appetizer and main course. Some restaurants have been known to serve up to seven times the normal portion for a meal.
Plan to leave food on your plate – or ask for half of his meal to be wrapped before it even reaches the table. Why you want to keep extra food out of sight: In a study by the Pennsylvania State University, researchers found that all the volunteers who received more food on their plates ate it – without feeling any information more fully later.
Appetizers are generally portion sizes realistic. Order Your Favorite meal with a side salad, snack or two to one that is more of plant origin.
Ask, ask, ask. Is it fried? What kind of sauce comes with it? What parts are served with each dish? "I can get brown rice instead of white?
Always ask for sauces and dressings on the side. You will realize how little of salsa and dressing really needs.
No new order something when you are very hungry. If it does, it is likely that much food, overeating, and despite later. If you're dying hunger, waiting for who knows what is good for you.
Order plenty of vegetables. Get a large mixed salad or vegetables sauteed in a little oil so olive oil or steamed with sauce on the side (where it can dip into the sauce).
Sip a bit of broth. The soup is a good food to fill you with high volume. Search vegetable-based broth, soups and beans. Avoid cream-based soups and soups.
Step 3: Finish with a flourish
Do not let your guard down after the server sneaks into the kitchen with your order. However, you should exercise some caution when your food arrives perfectly ordered.
Stay alert. It easy to get caught in an interesting conversation and eat everything on his plate without thinking about it. After it has finished its assigned amount, which the server wrap with their leftovers. The bonus is that you have tomorrow's lunch (or dinner) and prepared.
Finish your meal with a refreshing green tea or herb. Ginger tea can aid in digestion, and green tea is good for your overall health. Many restaurants now offer a variety of exotic teas, so enjoy some! Some are so fruity teas are the perfect substitute for dessert.
Order one dessert for the table. Three bites of pie pan chef's signature chocolate caramel sauce does not hurt – just make sure someone else will complete the rest.
