Pilgrimage to the Sacred Tin Hau Temple in Kowloon…
The Tin Hau Temple in Causeway Bay was built by the Tai Family in early 18th century. The tail family first settled in a village in Kowloon which is now beneath the former Kai Tak Airport. According to the legend, one of the family members found a statue of Tin Hau when he was gathering grass and the whole family got together and built a small shelter for the statue. After some time, the shrine got popular among the locals and with donations from the people, the family built a proper shrine to Tin Hau.
Tin Hau temple is dedicated to the goddess of the same name, also known as Mazu; the Queen of the heaven and patroness of Seafarers. The legend says that she possessed some supernatural powers and used them to heal the sick and was able to walk over the surface of water. Now the temple is also associated with other divinities as well. Tin Hau temple is being declared as a national monument and has also given the name to the nearby railway station.
Today the area of Tin Hau Temple is a highly domestic area and houses some of the most recognizable landmarks in all of Hong Kong including Victoria Park, Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club and the Hong Kong Central Library. Causeway Bay is also heavily developed with the fashion industry and tourism.
